Polygonal mesh vs. Solid (NURBS/Spline)

Polygonal mesh is a model made out of polygon faces.

Most common mesh type formats:,.obj .fbx, .3ds, .dae, .stl, .max, .ma, .mb, .c4d, .blend, .lws, .lwo, .lw, .abc, .hrc, .xsi, .lxo, .lxl, .ztl, .pz3, .pp2, .3b, .spp, .duf, .mud, .tb, .tbscene, .ply, .b3d, .ms3d, .jas, .glb, .gltf, .usdz etc.

Most common software that support mesh type are: 3ds Max, Maya, C4D, Blender, Modo, Lightwave, Zbrush, Unity, UE4, Sketchup, Softimage, DAZ Studio, Poser etc.

We do not recommend importing solid nurbs formats to any software stated above nor do conversions. Imported solid models will be of high polycount, triangulated and may have issues such as cracks in geometry or flipped normals.

Solid (CAD/NURBS/Spline) models are made of splines. Spline is a mathematical equation defining a curve.

Most common solid/nurbs type formats: .stp, .iges, .ige, igs, .cat, .sat., 3dm, .rfa, .rvt, .dxf, .dwg, .sldprt, .sldasm, .slddrw, .catproduct, .catpart, .ipt, .asm, .cad, .jcd, .iam, etc.

Most common software that support such geometry type are: Rhino, Solidworks, Inventor, Autocad, Revit, TinkerCAD, Infraworks, ArchiCAD, CATIA, Fusion 360, 3D Builder etc.

We do not recommend importing mesh formats to CAD software nor do conversions. Polygonal mesh formats may import as a single object and be difficult to edit.
